When it comes to website design, choosing the right colour scheme (or “color” scheme as web designers and programmers are forced to write!) is one of the most important parts of the process. Choosing the right scheme for the subject of your content can dramatically enhance the look and feel of your website.

Website designers often overlook the importance of choosing browser-compatible colours. At present browsers only see 256 colours, and the major browsers only share 216 of those. This means choosing obscure colours in either your style sheet or in an image can lead to undesirable appearances in different web browsers.

To be sure your website doesn’t fall foul of this compatibility problem, it is best to stick to “web safe” hexadecimal colour codes. Most image editing packages have the option of choosing only web safe colours when creating your “masterpieces”, or you can click on the following link for a helpful palette of browser-safe colours.
